LAST Ep

Last Ep of TTT

LA LA is a joke!  A state sanctioned circus where people come to idolise other people for trivial accomplishments. Don't get me wrong I love watching movies, but everything here is a plastic facade. A spectacle of crap!! about as entertaining as a show bag with out chocolates.

Today I got out of my fringed dwelling of LA and headed down to Santa Monica pier which is still a spectacle but a nicer place. Tomorrow I'll hopefully get to venice beach "the humane zoo" should be fun.

Enough Whining though... How about an image to make you guys laugh... Below is a shot of “me ‘ed” after the open mat. Not the most flattering shot and perhaps a little Narcissistic, I’ll give you that! But I thought some of you might like to laugh at it,  and to find some solace in the idea that everyone dog has his day or as Renzo say’s “sometimes you’re the hammer and sometimes you’re the nail” ,  or in this case "sometimes your the nail and sometimes your the nail" so here it is;

Yesterdays training was a good session;,cobrinha basically jumped straight into the session with some techniques. Two passes that we’re linked by a common response (defence/bloke by the opponent). The class had no warm up… just bang straight into the technique, then it was timed rounds for the remainder. Cobrinha and Fabio (the other instructor there) were both on the Mat rolling with everyone and at the end of the class, Cobrinha hung around discussing different situations and answering any questions anyone had,  he showed some great stuff here and emphasized the need to drill, DRILL and DRILL some more!!

Ok so I am at the end of my sojourn around, through, in and out of a small part of America and an equally small part of its Ju Jitsu culture. As brief as it has been I’ve picked up some tricks, tips and techniques and hopefully some motivation or a desire to move forward as well as a better perspective on where I am at personally with Zhoo Zhitsu!!

So I'll have about 19 hrs to try and remember and reflect on all the little bits and pieces I’ve seen over the weeks so that hopefully I can impart them on to you guys.  But one definite technique I've had emphasised to me over the weeks is "mat time" you can't beat mat time, the best guys were the guys you saw at every class, morning, lunch and noon. So hopefully see you all at training next week.. OSU or as some might say MOOS!!

Cyborg No Gi Triangle from Knee Ride

Might work these in tomorrow nights second class.

Ep4 The Open Mat and no one walks in LA

Jeroen has put me onto an app so that I can blog since my Mac has decieded to go and hang out with steve jobs (RIP) for a little while, just hope steve doesn't keep all my photos amongst othere misc files. So thanks to Jeroen I can blog, no thanks to this app I can't spell check, let this be a warning; I put wet stooff on da hot stooff :)

Two days ago I arrived in LA and I basically chose my hotel based on proximity to the club. Down side is that it is not close to anything else, cept la brea tar pits, which are just Pit full of tar seeping from the ground ( kinda interesting but not what you would come to LA for. So in a nut shell if you don't have a car in LA... Ya F&$€ed! And even more screwed when ur mac dies and ur credit card snaps ( and becomes useless ) but thats what LA is about... Its makes you or breaks you.., lucky I fly out tomoz.

So the open mat was a perfect way for me to filter into Cobrinha club and even better cause classes aren't held on sundays so I got an extra day. There were guys from all over the place even as far as San Diego ( saulo's). A few guys that I spoke to were from the following; JJ machado, Rigans, Gracie accademy, Paragon and so on. It was a perfect opportunity to net work and find clubs... If only I had more time.

So Cobrinha introduced himself and the session and then it was "the awkward ball" ( find a dance partner a begin training ). Everyone danced and changed partners every 6 minutes. In the begining I found myself out in badlands, dark colors standing on every corner. He he. Rollnumber two was the man himself "Cobrinha" cant really remember much other than thinking... Nothing is working, he basically set up camp on my back ( pass, back, pass back). He was really approachable though and during the roll he made some observations and gave some tips :)

All in all was a great session, you can always tell it wasgoid when you get home and your heads all bruised up.

Well thats it for now I am off to the human circus " venice beach boardwalk"

This pick is of the class before adv classes last night, its basically just all drilling specific reaction and the last 15 minutes is a technique

Saturday, October 8, 2011

So this Episode has been a long time coming in part due to our internet dropping out in NY and the fact that spare time on the net has been drastically chewed up by booking hotels and cars. These two things have also drastically chewed up my funds.

In short we have been covering a mass distance of America via trains, plains and automobiles or no trains, but you get the idea. Sedona was my favorite place so far. Vegas was very short lived ( no training L ), San fransico was just as short ( no training ) and all the towns inbetween ( no training ).

Ok so that’s the explanation and now for a quick BJJ story, Last few session at MG were pretty cool but I was getting in there early in the morning and due to the Comp a lot of guys had backed off their training.  Paul showed some good half guard stuff (he’s a gordo BB so pretty much his bread and butter) and we did a few escapes.

Next day I headed out to No-gi Pan’s. At first I was a little disappointed because I thought it would be a bigger event. Lots of good guys but it just wasn’t as grand as I expected but then I think I was confusing the Pan and World no-gi. The main matches I watched was Lucas Lepri in the semi and final… he basically just walked through the two guys,I don’t think he was even sweating when he walked off.

I had asked him about conditioning at the gym and he said he just did some Oly lifts and Bulgarian bag work… gotta get a bag (that must be the difference). Its actually scary how far above the level was. At one point he had attempted to pass deep half but got caught so after balancing for a while near the edge of the mat, you could see he decided to give up the sweep. Not as soon as he was swept did he straight away arm drag back to the top (giving uo something to get something, like sacrificing a pawn to get a bishop). His next opponent he took down, and then just controlled him and took his back eventually. He looked super calm and really composed, like it was just another training session. The next match I watched was Henrique (MG) and the Half guard terrorist Ciao go at it in the finals. This was a crazy macth, little guys are so good to watch and these two guys are sooooo little, Ciao looks like a boy! I think Ciao won by Adv.  I’ve filmed some of it so I’ll try and post it.

The states has been smashing my Bank account due mainly to hotels and unforeseen glitches. This and not being able to find out when I am due back at work has put an end to Brazil L oh well. At the moment I fly back on Wednesday 12, but I am trying to get my flights extended so I can get down to San Diego, but it all depends on how much they want to charge me for the change. Hopefully tomorrow I’ll get into cobrinha’s to get the gold for you guys.

This is a shot of the comp... guess they all look the same, cept maybe ADCC ( Pro-gi and No - gi)

UFC 136 The Great Debate

Ok here is a really short and quick post or more precisely just some pics.. I've written another post but its in drafting form so provided there is an internet where we are heading next I'll try and get it up.

One pick Of MG at the 7.00am class and the other is of Sedona... I think the (bare MG) the best place we have visited so far.

Ep2 Travotine and northsouth choke!!

So tonight was No-gi for an 1.30 and I recon about 30 guys on the mat which made some of the warm up seem long (note to self write down warm up routine). After treading the foot path and museum tour of town, I was well hammered and definately needed to get down to the gym. Tonights classes run until 10pm and after which just about nothing closes here, so you can grab dinner and coffee and new shoes/clothes (i.e UA rashie long sleeve $30USD, like the birds "cheap, cheap.) after training, very cool.

So the technique we did was pretty sweet most of its in the title and so rather than bore you with the details..... hopefully I recall it all on  my possible return I'll impart my knew found knowledge.

Long and short we did: Pass to side control counter far side underhook, attack arm, use the escape to mount, steer opponent to mounted guillotine or if countered switch off to side and move to north south choke :)

The highlight of tonight was having my glaring, obvious and some what large holes pointed out to me, by none other than the man, the legend, the cuz and for those who don't know; 2007 World Champion (amongst other titles) Lucas Lepri. With what seemed like sleepy movement he proceeded to control and attack me for 8 - 10 minutes. Lucas lives here in NYC and trains at Alliance, but comes up to MG twice a week to in his words; " see and train with my friends" namely I think a little guy by the name of Henrique Reznde who's a coach here along with Paul Schriener. Hopefully at some point this week I am gonna head down to Lucas's gym and train down there this week.  Just gotta find a way to dry my gi quicker.

Its late here and I am falling asleep typing this, so I apologise for lack of humour and any grammatical errors, of which I am sure there are many... ( must get someone to dictate my post too).

Ep1 TTT Smitty Guward!

Alright... heres the first of hopefully many posts, on what will serve as a limited journal of my (TTT) Tips, tricks and techniques of the grand tour de gymnasium!! Moose!

Quick rundown:
So after literally about a day of flying we arrived in NYC (19hrs to LA and 5.3 to NYC connection), so today (three days on) I've finally adjusted I think... even though I just dropped my whole coffee Argh!! (Jason multi tasking score: 0 for 0). We moved into our apartment that we sourced off Airbnb and originally I wasn't sure if it was legitimate, but turns out to be a gold mine. We are in a great locale in an apartment all to ourselves and for around $125 a night, free web its a bargain. Main draw cards are 10 minutes walk from time square and MG and for Heidi Macys is pretty much just down our street. Plus the apartments nice typically small but not much time spent here anyways.

Alright to the nitty gritty after a recon mission in the morning to MG I return later in the day with a gi in hand and a fist full of green backs (training cost alittle bit). First disappointment is that MG will not be in all week due to Post ADCC rest... DOH! None the less the class I attended had some really good guys and clearly I walked in with a target on my back in the color of purple because there were no easy beats.... cept maybe my first roll.... after that it was " hey you and me lets go" or "jason you can go with this guys next" good to see its a universal protocol, hehe. All of that aside the technique we did was THE SMITTY GUWARD!!! x - guard, to be more precise it was a: "grape vinned mount escape to single leg x-guward sweep" and for the remainder of the class during free rolling I found myself stuck balancing in some form or adaptation of this guard ( great sweep defence paul).

Choke from Back Control

The move is on.....All hands on deck!

Next Saturday 30th July at 9am we will be moving the mat to our new full time premises at 4 Bruce St, Mornington. We need as many hands as possible to help us load and unload the trucks and get set up for classes at the new venue. Training will then run as scheduled from Tuesday 2nd August on the usual timetable. We will need help from our resident tradesman to build change rooms and a shower once we have settled in. There will also be room for a crossfit style training area and perhaps a ring or cage. Please come down and help us out next Saturday. Thanks to Dave for his patience in negotiating the lease, please everyone thank him personally when you next see him. Exciting times...Osu.

Club News Update

Firstly our best wishes go out to Nial Macdonagh, a Mornington Extreme Blue Belt, who this weekend will be competing in a Hawaii Ironman qualification race in Korea. Good Luck Nial, it's your time now. After a less than ideal preparation to circumstances beyond his control, Nial has shown amazing determination to refocus for this race.

Secondly, congratulations to all the juniors who graded last night after another terms worth of training. Its fantastic to see the technical progress these young athletes are making. I am excited at the prospect of taking a junior team to this years Pan Pacs in September. Our Junior coaches are doing a great job.

Lastly, in two weeks time, all things going well. We will move into our first full time premises at 4 Bruce St in Mornington. After 5 years in part time venues this is a big step up but we are ready. This will give us more useable space, room for a small gym, office and change rooms. I will revises the timetable once we get up and running and arrange an official opening. Stay tuned!

PS Looking forward to GITM next week. All 12 spots are taken, fix me up for coin if you haven't already. Should be a fun night.

Timetable Changes

From next week there will be subtle changes to the timetable. There will now be two junior classes during the week from 6-7pm on Tuesday and Thursday. We would like to get the kids training more often and some of the older boys incorporated into the adult beginner classes once they reach 14-15 years old. Boxing for MMA will be at 9am on Saturday followed by MMA at 10am and lastly by No Gi training at 11am. So for those guys wanting to do MMA style training come in at 9am and for those just wanting to wrestle come down for a 11am start. The goal will be to train guys up for inter club fights as well as C class Shooto events locally. Please bring your own gloves (MMA and 16oz), mouthguard, headgear and shin pads to each session. No gear, no train.

The Pyjama Game by Mark Law

Just finished reading this book today and I must say its one of the best martial arts books I've read. The book covers the history of judo, its competitors and stories of training and competing. The comparisons to BJJ training are obvious and it even gets a mention in the book, as basically just modified Kodakan Judo! Not sure if I agree with the author entirely in this respect, but as a practicing judoka some bias is to be expected. Very well written, Mark Law does a great job of explaining the combat arts to both new readers as well as experienced practitioners. I came away knowing more about something I already thought I knew a thing or two about. Great read.

Tapping Out

This really simple act of tapping your partner in training to let you go seems to create a lot of confusion and frustration in students of BJJ. I watch many of new guys getting really frustrated at having to tap often during free training. I wonder why its such a big deal to them, firstly, and secondly what did they expect to happen when training with a vastly more experienced and technical opponent? I imagine its a case of perspective. Perhaps they actually don't know how little they know about grappling or that submitting is somehow a direct attack on their manhood or ego. One of the uncomfortable realities of training in BJJ is that for first year you are going to spend many hours being squashed, twisted and controlled. And as a result of this control you will tap out often. This will bruise your ego. Aside from the physical demands of the sport this alone stops many students continuing with training.

I think its important to understand the difference between training and competing. When you see guys submitting in a UFC fight their careers are being defined, big money lost, millions are watching, months of diet, conditioning, sparring has gone into a single moment of saying I've have had enough, please let go now. But on a training mat with a bunch of guys just trying to get better at BJJ then tapping out is just learning and growing. It's realising that someone just beat you at human chess or checkers, depending on your skill level. Its best just to put the pieces back on the metaphorical board and start again. No big deal, its not the UFC or the World Championships.

Also as time goes by and you want to work on more than just your A game.To round out your skills as a blue or purple belt on the mat you will need to go back to the drawing board and start all over again. For example, if you have a crazy top game that lets you dominate most of the guys on the mat, then at some point, if you want to keep getting better and more technical you will need to play guard more often. This means getting submitted often, all over again, until you improve. Deal with it. There will even come a time when you tap everyone at the club, then you train with someone better elsewhere and guess what, more tapping. If you want to improve it never ends. Sure as you climb the ranks over the years, you tap more guys more often, but if want to keep improving make sure you're on the receiving end to better, more technical training partners.

That's one of the best things about training in BJJ or Judo or Boxing, there is no argument or gray area. A tap out, throw or knock out settles the argument. Its final and its real. There is no excuses, its the ultimate pressure test. Check mate. Learn to say "Reset" and just go again. Learn from the process, become more technical, move your hips more, improve your base, protect your neck, keep your elbows in.....whatever it is the answer is rarely I need to be stronger or more aggressive. Technique, Timing and Sensitivity. And the ONLY way you really learn and improve is by tapping out while your pressure testing you techniques. Maybe it's worth trying to keep some perspective on this simple act of saying please let go and focus your energy instead on getting better at Jiu Jitsu.

Budo news - Cameron Quinn

Strength, speed or accuracy

The strong man is dangerous.
The fast man is dominant.
But the accurate man is deadly.

Leverage and technique can nullify a strong man.
Distance and timing can neutralize a fast man.
An accurate man is always deadly because
everything he does is effective.

When you throw a punch, where are you aiming? The face? What if you miss the face? What do yo hit?

Here is simple approach to changing your training mindset that will change your whole game:
When you are aiming for, let's say, the face, don't just aim at the face, aim at the chin.
Not just the chin, aim for the middle of the chin.
Not just the middle of the chin, aim for the dimple in the middle of the chin.
Not just the dimple, aim for the freckle in the dimple.
Not just the freckle, aim for the hair growing out of the middle of the hair in the freckle in the dimple.
If you miss the hair, you still might get the freckle, the dimple, the middle of the chin, the chin, the face.
But if you just aim for the face and you miss the face, what do you hit?
My mate Damian Martin reminded of the words of Wyatt Earp and they have been scribed on my dojo wall for many years:

"Speed is good,
but accuracy is better."
