Joe Rogan gets his Black Belt from Eddie Bravo

Well said Joe about why BJJ is so important to him as a person, I couldn't agree more. Skip to the 4.00 minute mark if you don't want listen to Eddie Bravo ramble like I did.

Sonnen Open Workout Pre UFC 148

Learnt a lot watching this clip. The sport of MMA has come a long way since Royce Gracie. The level of stand up and wrestling that Sonnen brings is unbelievable. Very impressed with this series of light pad work, drills and footwork, tie ups, clinch work and shots.

Common mistakes in half guard - Stephan Kesting

Quote taken from crossfit.com

"If one can stick to the training throughout the many long years, then will power is no longer a problem. It's raining? That doesn't matter. I am tired? That's besides the point. It's simply that I just have to."

Wake up running

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle: when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.

Grading Results

Congratulations to our four new blue belts at Mornington Extreme. Unfortunately I couldn't be there on the day, but was wrapped to see the photos online. It is a pleasure coaching such a bunch of committed guys. I don't think there is pair of normal ears between them! All your hard work and decdication has paid off.

Squish like grape.....

Cant beat Mr Miyagi for training advice:

Miyagi: Now, ready?
Daniel: Yeah, I guess so.
Miyagi: [sighs] Daniel-san, must talk. [they both kneel]
Miyagi: Walk on road, hm? Walk left side, safe. Walk right side, safe. Walk middle, sooner or later [makes squish gesture]
Miyagi: get squish just like grape. Here, karate, same thing. Either you karate do "yes" or karate do "no." You karate do "guess so," [makes squish gesture]
Miyagi: just like grape. Understand?
Daniel: Yeah, I understand.
Miyagi: Now, ready?
Daniel: Yeah, I'm ready.

Quote

Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it.  Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before.  ~Jacob A. Riis

Kron Gracie v Zak Maxwell

For once I'm not interested as much in Kron as this kid Maxwell who has been training since 5 years of age and is the son of Steve Maxwell. Big future this kid. Keeps a nice even pace, simple techniques with great timing and sensitivity. Kron obviously is no slouch.

Wise words from Dan John

Please take the time to read the following blog post by Coach Dan John. This is really worthwhile blog to follow in that it places your training into a context for your life. I recently read his new book Never Let Go and found it inspirational. If your a reader make sure to check it out.

Let the jiu jitsu do the work...

We all have different strengths and weaknesses when it comes to BJJ (and life). Size, patience, speed, strength, flexibility, intelligence, cunning, endurance, power, explosiveness and ruthlessness are qualities we possess, for example, in different measures depending on our genetics, personality and our training. The trick with jiu jitsu of course is not to rely on theses attributes or build a game based entirely on our own individual strengths. The reason that expert smaller BJJ players can handle larger and stronger novice players with such ease is largely due to improved technique, timing and sensitivity. Now as obvious as this may seem I am staggered at how rarely students of the game relinquish their strengths and just work on their technical improvement, timing and sensitivity. Ironically, the successful progress through the ranks is based soley on on how well you can work through the weak areas in your game and thereby gain increased technical proficiency. Notice here that it has absolutely nothing to do with how many people you tap in a nights training or how many tournaments you win. These are wonderful things for sure, but they can sometimes be misleading when it comes down to how technical your game is; Did you win with speed, power or endurance? Or were you using technique? When push comes to shove can you let the jiu jitsu do the work? We now have a group of blue belts that have carried their grade well for a number of years and the question now must be how technical are you? Do I, as your coach, see the same positions, transitions and submissions played out every single time you roll or can I see you work through different avenues of attack and defence in technical combinations? Perhaps paradoxically the only way this goal can be achieved is to step outside your comfort zone while rolling, play, try things, open up the game, experiment, and heaven forbid maybe tap out some more. By losing more you will progress faster. Flesh out your game; be balanced on top and have a solid guard, pass in combinations to both sides, try new submissions and let go of old faithful for a while. Put your favourite sub to bed for 6 months. Food for thought. Make technical progress in the art of BJJ your goal not winning every single time you roll. Do that and you'll be ready for a new belt around your waist. You'll have entered into the higher BJJ ranks regardless of your individual attributes.

Greg Jackson MMA 101

A not so subtle ad for muscle pharm but some sound advice from one of the best in the business.

Ironman Melbourne this weekend

Our best wishes go to, Mornington Extreme blue belt,Niall McDonagh (pictured far left) who this weekend will be competing in the Ironman Melbourne Triathlon. With a solid prep and a home ground advantage with no hassles with travels and the like, we know he can achieve his dream of qualifying for the Hawaii Ironman race later this year. So with all due respect to our tough mudders out there, keep in mind that this race here is actually "probably the toughest event on the planet". While we sleep, eat and relax on Sunday keep Niall in mind as he swims (3.8km), rides (180km) and runs (42.2km). I have the utmost respect for Niall as a person, the dedication he demonstrates and the sacrifices he makes for his sport whilst balancing a young family and a full time executive role are inspirational. I have a feeling that this may be his time to shine. Good luck Niall from all the crew at Mornington Extreme!

Drilling

I often think that drilling is the "secret sauce" in improving rapidly in BJJ, particularly after the first 6-12 months of training. I enjoyed watching two guys at our club yesterday set a timer for 2 minutes and just repeat a single movement for time. Moving fluently and consistently they choose their pass, shut up and drilled the movement. They didn't waste time discussing the nuances of inverted De La Riva guard while moving nor waste energy trying to fight to the death. Smooth and consistent each rep, like a metronome, I could just see how this would translate to greater timing and sensitivity in the future. Even better each drill was written in a diary for future reference. Also I noticed they didn't drill submissions, but instead focused on smooth common transitional movements like passes, sweeps, maintaining top control and re-guarding. Much respect gentleman.

Learning new techniques is great and rolling or free training is always fun. But drilling is what sets apart the boys from the men. Spend more time drilling techniques is the lesson. Choose a transition, find a partner, set the timer and go to work. Its simple, but not easy as Dan John would say.
