Lyoto Machida

The evolutionary wheels of MMA are turning faster than ever. I never thought I'd see the day where karate style stand up would be the main weapon to win the light heavyweight UFC title. I just re watched the fight at mmascraps and paused it at the crucial moments before the beat down begun in earnest and the punch that first put Rashad onto one knee for a split second was an old school left reverse punch. From the there Lyoto follows with a right upper cut and then a left hook to drop Evans again. But in the lead up to this, when Rashad finally loses patience in the middle of the second round and started to look to land punches and initiate with head movement Lyoto beats him to the punch with a left reverse punch that was absolutely exquisitely timed, dropping Evans to one knee. What a game plan. He plays from the outside with perfect distance control, using kicks, sweeps and feints, drawing his opponents into range and then launching accurate strikes with precisley the correct timing, forestalling essentially, then finishing with power shots. Amazing. I thought my years of karate training were wasted. Perhaps not, there is still hope. The prevailing wisdom now after this fight seems to be to aim to put Lyoto on his back and work from there; but I would like to see even a strong wrestler get to a range where he can tackle Machida to the mat without eating some shots on the way in or risk being exposed with angular footwork. Against Tito at least, Machida look very heavy in hips and not easy to take down. Karate timing, distancing and footwork, who would have thought? Long live the dragon.

Judo training footage

Found this while looking at some Judo stuff on youtube. Obviously training footage from Japan and the little guy in blue is a groundwork (newaza) specialist, doesnt look like bjj though. I like the way he counters the throwing attempts by dropping his weight and attacking the weight bearing leg and then looks for his finishes. Some cool transitions here. Nice dojo too btw.

Not happy Jan

Where the hell did everyone go! Somewhere between births, deaths, marriages, rare skin diseases, man flu, winter blues, pregnancies, work commitments and a conglomerate of injuries the mat is officially empty. I have got no idea who is coming to the UFC 98 this Sunday at Slyms and have even less idea who is coming to the clubs 3rd birthday at the Hot Springs in Rye in two weeks. Two people have told me they cant make it and one other is interested. Thats it. I have paid in advance for 14 people at $70/head to get that booking and have nothing to show for it. If I dont get a firm commitment by this weekend I will cancel the lot and lose money due to the refund policy of the hot springs. So firstly consider training at some point please if its not too much trouble, secondly email, text, twitter, facebook, phone, write or talk to me in person and let me know what the feck is going on. Not happy Jan.

Here are the gold medalists for each of the weight divisions at the last Olympics in Beijing. Satoshi Ishii, the 100kg+ gold medalist from Japan, trains with Lyoto Machida below in Brazil and is known for his powerful Osoto Gari throw, also detailed below. Ishii is making moves into MMA and is looking for a UFC contract.

Camarillo Brothers

When jiu jitsu meets judo. Both the brothers have amazing pedigree in both arts. Lookout. Dave the older one in blue and Dan in white. Not playing for sheep stations here but some very cool throws and transitions. Not a bad pace either. Stole this vid from the Underground forum.

The great escape

The crazy dudes from Estonia are at it again. I remember this guy from the excellent functional half guard video. Some handy hints here on the most fundamental mount escape.

Sean Sherk S&C Workout

No one goes harder than Sherk at this type of training and watching him go through this workout is brutal. I will be interested in how he goes because although his gas tank never empties, his ground and pound game has become too predictable and one dimensional in modern MMA. Also great to see how specific strength and conditioning training has become for MMA. What a fantastic training facility for combat athletes. Very jealous.

Roadtrip To Brisbane

Been doing some background on the Queensland State Titles which are on Saturday 20th June. Not Sunday as previously thought. The tournament will be held in South Brisbane which is an easy 30min train trip from the airport so I was thinking of flying in on Saturday morning getting a 6am flight out of Melbourne ($119) and then coming back to Melbourne Sunday lunchtime ($160). So it will be about $300 in airfares and $100-$150 each for accomodation twin share. This is 7 weeks away so let me ASAP if your keen and I will go ahead and book the flights and accom. The longer we mess around the more expensive flights get. The thinking was to go to Brisbane now instead of Adelaide and then go to Adelaide later in August for the Champions Cup. I have emailed the guy in charge for more information and I think at least six takers to make it worth the trip.
